New Delhi: On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet sanctioned the construction of a new high-speed corridor spanning 166.80 kilometers, connecting Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam. This ambitious project is set to be developed under a hybrid annuity model, with a total investment of ₹22,864 crore.
The project will cover a distance of 166.80 km along National Highway 6, with 144.80 km located in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam.
Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given the green light for the development, upkeep, and management of this four-lane, access-controlled highway.
This new corridor is expected to significantly enhance travel efficiency for those commuting between Guwahati and Silchar.
The initiative aims to bolster connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region of Assam, thereby reducing both travel distance and time, which will ultimately improve logistics across the nation.
Furthermore, the corridor is anticipated to stimulate economic growth in Meghalaya, particularly in industrial sectors, as it traverses areas rich in cement and coal production.
According to the official statement, this route will also serve national and international tourists arriving via the well-connected Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar airports, linking them to various scenic attractions in the Northeast and promoting tourism.
This vital infrastructure project will enhance inter-city connectivity among Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar, passing through regions such as Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, and Cachar district in Assam. It aims to alleviate congestion on the existing NH-06 and align with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan for transport infrastructure development.
Upon its completion, the Shillong-Silchar Corridor is expected to be instrumental in fostering regional economic growth, improving links between Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Imphal, Aizawl, and Agartala.
The project is in line with the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, focusing on infrastructure enhancement while creating job opportunities and promoting socio-economic development in Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
